As a son of a miner's family, Franz Ludwig Cancrinus was born in Breidenbach (Biedenkopf) in 1738 in the former grand-duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. In 1741, the family moved to Bieber and worked in the services of the Principality of Hanau-Münzenberg. His father Johann Heinrich Cancrin took over the management of thw mine i…n Bieber. Franz Ludwig received a scholarship and studied mathematics and jurisprudence from 1759-1762 in Jena. During the years 1763-64, he travelled on a journey to the important mines of Germany which he described in a book on mining technology. In 1765, he started working in the rent chamber and building management in Hanau, focussing on mining and salt mines. In 1773, he got married to Maria L. Kröber. They had three children, including Georg Cancrin, who later became Russian Minister of Finance. As an architect, he built for example, the city theatre of Hanau, the park and the buildings of Wilhelmsbad, the Collegiengebäude in Darmstadt, the castle church at Friedberg Castle, the salt office and the windmill in Bad Nauheim. In the affair of von Gall, he was arrested by landgrave Wilhelm IX. and 1/2 year imprisoned in the castle of Babenhausen. In 1784, he became dirctor of the saline in Staraya Russa near Novgorod in Russia. He used six sabbatical years for writing in Giessen. In 1812, he retired and died in 1816 in St. Petersburg. As an author F. L. v. Cancrin was extremely hard working and published a large number of writings and books of which his 24-volume "Berg- and Salzwerkskunde" (mining and salt works science) is the most significant and extensive. 78 pp., 55 figs, br. gr. 8.
