This volume is the first of a two-volume History of the U.S.A. which represents a collaborative effort by an Englishman and an American to study American history from its beginnings to the present day. The authors are convinced that the history of the United States cannot be divorced frm that of the rest of the world and have paid especial attention to the place of the United States in the pattern of world events.
