Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. Book Club Edition. Like some enchanted princess in a fairy tale, shy, dreamy Edith Howe had for many years led a life that was placid and aimless, in the antique house presided over by her formidable Aunt, Mrs. Fanning. She was by no means plain, and since she lived in a small New England university town, it might have been expected that she would not want for romantic attention. But because she had spent most of her life in a house of indubitable elegance, Edith was proud; and because she and her bumbling, ineffectual father were hangers-on there, she was ashamed. So she passed her days in pursuits no more strenuous than reading poetry, listening to the Swedish maid reminisce about life in the old country, and washing her hair. Occasionally, to be sure, she was forced to hear Mrs. Fanning's complaints because she did nothing about finding herself a job, or because she did not even try to captivate the eligible Sylvester Wagstaff. But over the years Edith had developed an admirable stoicism, and so it really wasn't too difficult. Then Edith met Jacob Miller, the lecturer on Merovingian jewelry in the University museum- most unsuitable in every respect, from Mrs. Fanning's point of view. At almost the same moment, Mrs Canty-Mallet, who ran a terribly chic little decorating shop in New York, offered her a position which Mrs. Fanning thought she really ought to take. And young George and Lucius, whose parents were in Bermuda, came down from Sharon for a week's visit. By the time the week was over, nothing was as it had been before. Edith had fallen fumblingly but head-over-heals in love, for one thing- and now Mrs. Fanning (with the help of the boys from Sharon) must be placated or outwitted. Worst of all, for the first time in her life, Edith was faced with the task of making some momentous decisions.
