Ebensowenig wie die graphischen Werke, an denen Grundlagen und Eigenarten [seines] künstlerischen Vermögens besonders deutlich hervortreten, verbergen diese Skulpturen den Prozeß des Machens.1 Indem Lüpertz die Spuren seiner skulpturalen Arbeit der Anschauung des Betrachters überläßt, wird vollends deutlich, was ohnehin kaum zu übersehen ist: die künstlerische Zielsetzung gilt mit programmatischer Absicht nicht dem Schönen, sondern einer Gegenästhetik des Nichtschönen, das übrigens eine wesentliche, aber bis heute unerkannte Grundkonstante und ungewöhnliche Qualität seines gesamten CEuvres bildet. Sofern unterschiedliche Stadien eines Werkprozesses fotografisch dokumentiert sind ? so beispielsweise für die Figur des Frankfurter Apoll2 ?, läßt sich feststellen, wie Lüpertz vom Schönen zum Nichtschönen gelangt, glatte in rauhe Oberflächen, runde in kige Formen, harmonische in disharmonische Proportionen usw. verwanlt, kurzum das sinnlich Anziehende in harter Arbeit vom schönen auf den schönen Schein verlegen. Nicht allein mit dem Schönen verbindet sich bei ihm die Anmut, sie geht in seinem Werk vorzugsweise auf das Nicht-schöne über.
