The first and probably best known Lutheran work of systematic theology was prepared and published by Philip Melanchthon in 1521. This edition is by Theodosio Fabricion; and the title roughly translates from the Latin as "The Common Doctor Martin Luther, the German prophet of God and of the Written Form of the Latin Gnomologica & Aphoristica Collected, and in Five Classes by M. Theodosio Fabricio, Church Pastor of Gottingen".The book is bound in contemporary or slightly later full leather boards with gold titling on a leather label and four raised bands on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some expected signs of its age, including scuffing and some staining to the leather. The corners and bottom of the spine are lightly bumped and about 1/4" of the leather is missing from the top of the spine. There is partial splitting to the leather on the front spine edge with a small piece of the leather missing near the bottom of the spine, but the board is still securely held in place. There is a thin split on the top 1 1/2" of the rear spine edge. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and some scattered light foxing. The title page is soiled with some staining and foxing and a name and date has been written on the top corner. There is also some foxing on the following few pages and last page of the book. There is a faint water stain around the top corner of the first and last twenty or so pages. There may be a few other minor faults that have been missed, but overall this is a very good copy of a scarce 360 year old volume. PLEASE NOTE: Heavyish book so a little extra may be needed for shipping to non-UK customers.
