Two Rare Verse Broadsides From a "Reformed Drunkard and Infidel" [Broadside]. [Temperance]. Lutz, Marvin W. Zion's Trumpeter / Who Killed Tom Roper? and King Alcohol. Boston: M.E. Howard, Printer, [1870s?]. 10" x 14" sheet containing two broadsides divided by vertical fold line, both printed within ornamental borders. "Who Kille…d Tom Roper?" has two columns of verse, the second headed "King Alcohol," below headline and publisher's statement; "Zion's Trumpeter" has single column of verse below headline and publisher's statement. Moderate toning, light edgewear, horizontal fold line, faint creasing and minor faint staining to margins. $450. * This sheet contains two anti-alcohol broadsides published by Marvin W. Lutz, a self-described "Reformed Drunkard and Infidel.once called the wickedest man of Philadelphia.now Preaching Jesus and Temperance" after his conversion in November 1870. "Zion's Trumpeter" was also published under the title "Christian Watchman" and describes an encouraging conversation with Jesus. The broadside on the reverse of the bifolium contains two parodies of popular songs; "Who Killed Tom Roper?" is a parody of "Who Killed Cock Robin?" and "King Alcohol" is a parody of the classic Christmas carol "O Tannenbaum." These rare broadsides appear both together, as in our copy, and as separate sheets. OCLC locates copies in both states at Brown University and the New Hampshire Historical Society.
