Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In 1980 a group of scientists censusing marine mammals in the Bay of Fundy was astonished at the sight of 25 right whales. It was, one scientist later recalled, "like finding a brontosaurus in the backyard." Until that time, scientists believed the North Atlantic right whale was extinct or nearly so. The sightings electrified the research community, spurring a quarter century of exploration, which is documented here. The authors present our current knowledge about the biology and plight of right whales, including their reproduction, feeding, genetics, and endocrinology, as well as fatal run-ins with ships and fishing gear. Employing individual identifications, acoustics, and population models, Scott Kraus, Rosalind Rolland, and their colleagues present a vivid history of this animal, from a once commercially hunted commodity to today's life-threatening challenges of urban waters.Hunted for nearly a millennium, right whales are now being killed by the ocean commerce that supports our modern way of life. This book offers hope for the eventual salvation of this great whale. In 1980 a group of scientists censusing marine mammals in the Bay of Fundy was astonished by the sight of 25 right whales. Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Fourth Printing. (Number Line to 4). Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. The long inscription is to Dr. Louis B. Fierman. I purchased the book directly from his personal library. He was a psychotherapist and longtime Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University. The inscription from the author is interesting. It reads: 'I am eternally grateful for the enormous help and support you provided me through a very difficult time. As you once said 'never let a good depression go to waste'. That experience became a major personal resource towards the book and the work I do. Lovely seeing you and Ella again, John.' The author was Founding Director of the Center for Illness in Families while at Yale University and currently (at the time of this book's publication) at the University of Chicago. Elizabeth A. Carter of the Family Institute of Westchester wrote at the time 'a tour de force that should be used and reused by every professional concerned with family health and functioning. Stunningly inclusive and clearly presented, it is a casebook, a textbook, a reference book, and an easy-to-read primer with sophisticated interventions simply presented.' As you can see from the photographs, the book and dust jacket are in excellent condition. The covers of the book show very little wear. The spine ends and corners have no wear. There is a tiny nick at the front bottom edge, nothing much of anything. The pages of the book are very clean, very bright, no soiling, no markings, no writing/underlining, no creasing. The only imperfections in the book are 1) a very tiny spot at the top of the inside cover where a 1/1/6th of an inch of paper pulled off and 2) on the FFEP where the author has written an inscription, he also scotch-taped his card. You can see that in the second photo. The dust jacket is in excellent condition, very clean, no conspicuous wear. The flaps look terrific as well. The jacket is not priced or clipped. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. Inscribed by Author(s).
