Condizione: Trade paperback, New, Dan Sauer (illustratore). New York: Hippocampus Press:, 2025. Trade paperback, New, 295 pp. Cover artwork by: Dan Sauer "Scottish writer William Sharp (18551905) had already attained celebrity as a poet, critic, and fiction writer (including such weird stories as 'The Gypsy Christ' and 'The Graven Image') when, in the 1890s, he fashioned an alternate literary personality for himself: Fiona Macleod. Sharp came to believe that the soul of a woman lived within him, and he used this conception to produce an abundance of stories and poems that draw upon ancient Celtic myth. Oftentimes these works ventured into the realms of fantasy, terror, and the supernatural. Most famous is 'The Sin-Eater,' an unforgettable story of a man who ritually eats a cake laid upon the body of a dead man, thereby taking away his 'sins,' with unexpected and horrifying results. Other tales, such as 'Silk o' the Kine' and 'Ula and Orna,' are tales of romance that end with a supernatural climax. 'By the Yellow Moonrock' tells of a woman 'who could suck the soul out of a man through his lips.' Still other tales utilize Norse myth to create battle scenes reminiscent of Lord Dunsany and Robert E. Howard.".

Unnumbered copy from a limited edition of 450 printed on hand-made Van Gelder paper with deckle-edges (limitation stated upon concluding page). xxxii, 77 pages. H 21cm x L 13.25cm. Lacks separate dust jacket but bound in cream paper wraps over stiff card stock with lettering and decoration to the spine and front wrap. Wraps are toned with moderate soiling with shallow loss at spine ends, slight bumping and nicks at corners. Underlying the cream wraps is peeled spine paper which, in turn, exposes quires. Binding remains fairly firm but with a few splits evident between several interior leaves. Cream silk page-marker sewn into binding but with some associated slender discoloration occurring to spine margins of pages 24-25. Still a good copy of an uncommon title by the much collected Mosher Press. Foreword, Note, and three-scene play by Scottish poet, playwright, and literary biographer William Sharp (1855-1905) writing under the pseudonym of Fiona MacLeod.

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Publisher's blue string-tied wrappers, 16mo (6 x 4 1/2 inches), serial pagination 393 - 418 + [1] + Table of Contents for the Bibelot 1906 year + 6 leaves of ads (last two are unopened). This number featuring three selections by Fiona MACLEOD, the female pseudonym of William SHARP (1855-1905). Sharp, in an 1892 Pagan Review, "argued against discriminating between men and women, in language suggestive of the fraying of the boundaries of sex themselves. Sharp himself was shortly to attempt to prove the presence of a woman within" by the development of the MACLEOD persona (see Oxford Dictionary of National Biography entry by Murray G. H. PITTOCK, s.v. SHARP). Consequently, Sharp can perhaps be regarded as an early literary proponent of then-rudimentary gender fluid theory. Selections of her/his work in this number of The Bibelot are: (1) THE DISTANT COUNTRY; (2) THE MEMORY OF BEAUTY; and (3) THE WIND, THE SHADOW, AND THE SOUL. Upper wrapper with a little toning and lightly smudged at "Bibelot" red ink title. About Very Good notwithstanding. Mosher enthusiasts will be aware that surviving Bibelot single issues are fragile affairs, so we have stowed this copy safely now in a clear protective display sleeve with white card stock backing board. See BISHOP, p. 98, Number 29.
