Frontispiece portrait lacking in Vol. 1. A scarce and important work by the Swiss physician, writer and collector, Jean Jacques Manget (1652-1742). It is a comprehensive listing of medicinal plants and pharmaceutical remedies, arranged alphabetically with many cross references. Manget discusses plant names, medicinal uses, references in other noted authorities, and formulas for comopounding various remedies. The work was undoubtedly a valuable reference for the scientific community of his day. The 34 plates depict a variety of plants and apparatus used in drug preparation. There is a 61 page index at the end of Vol. 2. The binding on this set is in poor condition with much chipping and wear but the cover boards are firmly attached. In Vol. 1 the title page and first 90 or so pages of text are stained in the left middle portion. This affects 3 of the botanical plates. Some of the pages near the end of Vol. 2 have a small stain in the upper right corner. The rest of the text in both volumes is in very good condition with some minor foxing and wear. There are no tears or pieces missing from any of the pages or plates in both volumes. A rare set. Foreign postage extra on this large and heavy set.

Boards have chipping throughout, cracking to joints, bumping to corners, and soiling and scuff marks throughout. Lacquer or stain repair to some spine ends and corners, resulting in mismatched coloration between leather and repaired areas. Textblocks have moderate foxing throughout, stains to some pages, and mild wear to edges. All volumes contain two bookplates: one for "P. Bourgeois D. M. M." and a second for "Docteur Honoré". Volume 1 contains a bookplate on each pastedown, volumes 2-4 contain the bookplates on the front pastedowns only. Volume 4 has worming from the front pastedown to page 4 (impacting some text on page 2-3). Text in Latin. Shelved in Room A Oversized. The work was first published in Geneva in 1685; its second, augmented edition, of which the present copy is a rare example, was published in 1699 - by Johan Anthon Chouët and Davidis Ritter. The text of this second edition is augmented by numerous engraved plates. It encompasses 'almost all significant anatomical publications across the several decades prior to its publication, including writings of many physicians, including the ones mentioned below. Bibliotheca Anatomica is the most comprehensive collection of anatomical treatises produced in the 17th century.' Keynes states: ?This compilation includes almost all the most important anatomical texts of the century'. Russell calls it an ?extraordinary storehouse of seventeenth century anatomical works?(R. 524). Jean-Jacques Manget or Johann Jacob Mangetus (1652?1742) was a Genevan physician and writer. He was known for his work on epidemic diseases such as bubonic plague and tuberculosis. and. considered one of the "great compilers" of knowledge in the areas of medicine, surgery and pharmacology. Manget became Dean of the Valence medical faculty. Frederick III, Elector of Brandenburg appointed him his personal physician in 1699. Daniel Le Clerc or Leclerc (1652-1728) co-edited the groundbreaking 'Bibliotheca Anatomica' with Manget. Moreover, he authored the seminal 'Histoire de la Medecine', a work unique in its time, going beyond describing the current state of the art of medicine, but delving into the history of medical knowledge from ancient times to the then present. He drew heavily upon Al-Tamimi's seminal work, al-Murshid, upon which he based his views on dietetics and medicines. Le Clerc was elected to the Council of Two Hundred in 1701, a position he held until his death in 1728.
