Light water stain, not affecting legibility. Leather spine is gilt-lettered. Top edge gilt. Although the front and rear boards are not present, the binding is tight a…nd secure. The full title reads: "Exposition of the Conduct and Character of Dr. John Augustine Smith, President of the Coll. of Physicians and Surgeons in the City of New York, and Professor of Physiology, as Exhibited in the Session of 1839-40." The Dictionary of American Biography article on Dr. Smith (1782-1865) reports that in 1841, "One unpleasant incident occurred [at the College of Physicians and Surgeons]. A controversy with James R. Manley, lecturer on obstetrics, whose appointment Smith had opposed, and whose eviction from the faculty he secured, led in 1841 to the sharp strictures of a forty-eight page pamphlet entitled EXPOSITION OF THE CONDUCT AND CHARACTER OF DR.
