Not only was the WWII German warship Tirpitz among the largest and toughst of the battleship breed, but she also proved to be an extremely difficult target for attack by sea or by air. The Tirpitz seldom put to sea where she could be engaged by opposing heavy warships or by air or submarine attack. In fact the Tirpitz spent much of her time in commission lying in the sheltered waters of Norwegian fiords where aircraft bombing raids were hampered by terrain, weather and German defences. These enclosed waters also posed extreme hazards for midget submarine and "Chariot" (human torpedo) attacks. Gervis Frere-Cook's "The Attacks on the Tirpitz" (No 8 in the publisher's Sea Battles in Close-Up series) covers all these options to sink the Tirpitz, dividing his account into five chapters recording the earliest attacks, including bombing by the RAF and carrier strikes by the Fleet Air Arm (FAA) as well as the possibility of fleet surface action, the Chariot attempts, the X-Craft (midget submarie) attacks, the several FAA strikes and the Bomber Command raids of late 1944 which ultimately sent the Tirpitz down, although in water so shallow that part of her upturned hull was stiill above the surface. Not only is this small book packed with information, but it also emphasises the threat the Tirpitz posed, especially to the convoys to Russia, and the varied and innovative efforts Britain made to remove this threat; achieved only at high cost in lives lost, to say nothing of ships, aircraft and other military materials. A compact but comprehensive record of the long-running campaign to sink one enemy warship. First edition from Ian Allan of 1973. 112 pages including 10 aooendices, bibliography and index, 54 b/w photos with 14 maps/plans. Grey hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, ink letter G top edge FFEP, internally otherwise excellent with no inscriptions. Pictorial DJ also VG+. This small, light book will be posted at cost.

New Zealand's volunteer coast guard organisation was established on the Hauraki Gulf and Auckland's Waitemata Harbour in the 1930s. Over time the movement expanded to see stations set up at most NZ ports and boating communities. During WWII it was aligned with the Home Guard to continue its operations. Following that conflict development of CG was more sustained and by the 1990s was operating on a nation-wide basis with modern and sophisticated prodedures and equipment. The author is a former CG president and commanding officer and his excellent history covers its evolution from a small and dedicated group of voluneers to the present efficient and vital service to those who go down to the sea. First edition of 1995, 280 pages including list of NZ CG stations, eight appendices, index, four colour plates depict CG insignia, flags and badges, b/w photos throughout, some documents, maps, plans etc. Colour pictorial card covers VG+, internally excellent, no inscriptions.

Unashamedly a plea for the conservation and protection of the remaining, but fragile, unique environment and ecology of Queensland's North Stradbroke Island, this book has much more to interest the general reader. As well as the fauna. flora, marine inhabitants, the book also covers the history, Aboriginal and European of the island, the convict, quarantine and asylum establishments, early settlers, industries, shipwrecks and natural dangers the delicate sand island faces, in addition to those posed by human activities and development. A well produced book that has hopefully acheived some of the restraints its authors espouse. 167 pages, including 10 appendices, references, b/w photographs, art, sketches, maps plans throughout. Colour pictorial card covers VG+, ditto textblock, no inscriptions.
