First edition (not stated). x, 316 pages. Hardcover: H 24cm x L 16cm. Lacks dust jacket. Blue cloth with vibrant silver stamped spine lettering, light bumping to top board corners. Author's ten-line signed inscription on the front free endpaper unfortunately obscured under ten equal swaths of black marker but dated November 1978 to Mississippi State University historian and author John Bettersworth. Born on August 29, 1881 in Crystal Springs, Copiah County, Mississippi, Pat Harrison was admitted to the state bar in 1902 and initially practiced law in the small southeast Mississippi town of Leakesville whence he moved to Gulfport. After several years as District Attorney for the state's second district, Harrison was elected in 1910 as a Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives and served in the 62nd to 65th Congresses from March 1911 to March 1919. Harrison won his campaign for a US Senate seat in 1918 and served four terms from March 1919 to his death in office on June 22, 1941. Although often overshadowed by the demagogue grandstanding antics of fellow Mississippi politician Theodore G. Bilbo, Harrison's political career was of particular national significance during the New Deal years for he was President pro tempore of the Senate during the 77th Congress and Chairman of the Committee on Finance from the 73rd to 77th Congresses. Still a bright and clean very good+ copy despite the unfortunate marring of the author's warm inscription. {Shelf #1} ISBN 0878050760.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Ellen S. Woodward (1887-1971) was touted as Roosevelt's second most powerful woman appointee. Among American women only Eleanor Roosevelt and Labor Department Secretary Frances Perkins could claim more elevated roles in the circle of FDR's administration. This long overdue biography of such a remarkable leader traces Woodward's odyssey from the parlors of her Mississippi clubwomen associates to a position as director of women's work relief under three successive New Deal agencies from 1933 to 1938.Swain depicts Woodward in the vital roles she took in alleviating the working woman's plight. Particularly rich is Swain's account of Woodward's attempts to remain vital in policymaking during the Truman era, when Eleanor Roosevelt was no longer the central figure of the women's coterie.Without minimizing the limitations of the programs under Woodward's aegis, Swain gives ample attention to the operation and internal dynamics of her ambitious projects. Though some of Woodward's project proved to be disappointing, others became rich legacies for programs in later administrations.
