Full Leather. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Londini [London]: Typis E. Fletcher [ulque ad I. Sam. deinde a II.R e.g. inclusive ad finem Voluminis] & T. Roycroft. Prostat apud Cornelium Bee in vico Little Britain. Anno Domini MDCLXIX [1669]. First Edition. Contact for anterior collation. In "In Genesin", 1,247 pp. "In "I…Samuelis" (Pars Posterior), 1,027 pp. Elephant Folio, approx 15.75" tall. Full leather with six spine ribs, decorative tooled panels at covers. Very massive volume barely fits on a large-format scanner (see scans); too heavy for spine scan. Chip at spine top, roughening at spine bottom, general moderate scuffing. Some creasing and very faint waterstaining to initial few leaves. Minimal foxing. Hinges relatively strong. Overall, Very Good. The first volume of Matthew Poole's opus, a life work in which he surveyed and encapsulated a wide variety of religious writings on both the Old and New Testaments. Poole, born in York in 1624, graduated from Emmanuel College in Cambridge in 1645, and succeeded Anthony Tuckney at St. Michael-le-Querne church, but would shortly thereafter leave the pastorate; as a strict Presbyterian, he resigned his living rather than conform to the Act of Uniformity. William Lloyd (later Bishop of Worcester) suggested that Poole then undertake his life's masterwork, the Synopsis. Viewed as a usable summary of then-extant religious writings from (almost] every source imaginable, the Synopsis is, in fact, an exercise in conciseness, as difficult as that may be to imagine of a set of five mammoth elephant folio volumes [of which this is volume 1 only]. Poole later decided to make the Synopsis - which was, and is here, written entirely in Latin - more accessible to the common man by producing an English version, but died in 1679 before he could complete this. John Howe and others did see to the ultimate completion of the English version. See scans. L2OKSH.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. 5 volume set. Massive folios. Contemporary binding, with white spines over brown boards. Wear to spines. One volume spine significantly frayed, with outer over coming undone at top. An unsophisticated set. Binding good. Scattered foxing/spotting, but generally clean and usable. Heavy shelfwear. Small… theological library tag inside front cover. Please no international orders, this is an extremely large set. Matthew Poole (1624-1679) was an English Nonconformist theologian. He is best known for this work, Synopsis Criticorum Biblicorum, where he presents the view of 150 biblical critics (Catholic, Rabbinical, etc.) Poole attempted to bring together all that had been written to illustrate the Scripture throughout the ages. -DNB. An important early English (Puritan) source of religious commentary. "An elaborate and much-esteemed work, on which the author spent ten years. It consolidates with great skill and conciseness all the Critici Sacri of the London edition into one continued comment, besides many valuable additions from the authors of note." Lowndes IV, p. 1912.
