Mayer kultivierte mit großem Glück "als erster in Deutschland, orthopädische Osteotomieen, theils lineare, theils keilförmige, beim Genu valgum und bei Verkrümmungen des Ober- und Unterschenkels" Gurlt Joseph Anton Mayer (1798-1860), welcher - aus mir unbekannten Gründen - weder bei Richter noch bei Schildbach noch bei Kornmann in ihren sonst so ausführlichen und genauen Berichten erwähnt ist, wurde 1798 zu Haßfurth (Unterfranken) geboren und war nach Beendigung des Medizinstudiums in Würzburg fast 4 Jahre Assistenzarzt im Juliusspital unter K.v.Textor. 1825 ließ er sich "als praktischer Wundarzt in Würzburg häuslich nieder. Im Jahre 1826 erhielt ich von der medicinischen Fakultät in Gießen das Diplom als Doctor der gesamten Heilwissenschaft. In dem nächsten Jahre begründete ich aus eigenen geringen Mitteln in meinem beschränkten eigenthümlichen Hause, Kapuzinergasse Nr. 19, Abth. II meine orthopädische Heilanstalt, welche ich bald darauf mit einem Wasser- und Dampfbade in Verbindung brachte." Nach dem Vorbild von J.Heine in Cannstatt richtete er auch Seebäder ein. "Er warf acht Pfund Seesalz in eine Kufe voll Wasser, worin eine Quirle, die von einem Dachshunde im Tretrade in Bewegung gesetzt wurde". Bezeichnend für die Zeit ist, daß er außerdem ein Blutegelzucht errichtete. . Die orthopädische Anstalt von Mayer bestand noch über das Jahr 1855 hinaus, über die weiter Schicksale habe ich nichts Erfahrung bringen können , wahrscheinlich wurde sie beim Tode des Begründers 1860 aufgelöst. Danach entstand in Würzburg ein Vakuum, bis Albert Hoffa, Assistent an der Chirurgischen Universitäts-Klinik (Juliusspital) unter Hermann Maas und Karl Schönborn, 1886 in Würzburg, Friedenstraße eine Privatheilanstalt für orthopädische Chirurgie, Heilgymnastik und Massage errichtete. -c.
