He received his Ph.D. in 1962 from the University of Iowa, with one of the first intensive analyses of a cinema comedian: an evaluation of three feature films starring Harold Lloyd. McCaffrey has been active in the promotion of film scholarship with the international organization, The Society for Cinema Studies. He has served as secretary and councilman for the group. In 1965 he interviewed Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton to develop several of his major studies. He has created a research method that examines a comic film in detail by studying visual and verbal humor through the use of a motion picture editing viewer and recording equipment.
