Lowell Jackson Thomas (April 6, 1892 August 29, 1981) was an American writer, broadcaster, and traveler, best known as the man who made Lawrence of Arabia famous. Thomas was born in Woodington, Darke County, Ohio, to Harry and Harriet (Wagner) Thomas. His father was a doctor, his mother a teacher. The show was attended by twenty-one thousand people and included the famous first appearance of the "Floradora Sextette," with Boris Karloff, Eddie Cantor, Clifton Webb, Danny Kaye, Ed Wynn and Vincent Price performing in drag dressed as women and Tallulah Bankhead, Gertrude Lawrence, Eve Arden, Leonora Corbett, Peggy Wood, and Sophie Tucker costumed as men. Myrna Loy performed a mock strip tease, auctioning off pieces of her wardrobe as she disrobed. Also on the bill was Dick Powell, Loretta Young, Jimmy Durante, Bette Davis, Joe E. Lewis, Kate Smith, Ray Bolger, Dinah Shore, the Rockettes, Bert Lahr, John Garfield, the Ink Spots, and many more. The show raised $10 million in bonds and inspired the Hollywood Victory Caravan, a bond raising nationwide tour by Hollywood stars. Includes texts by Walter Lippmann, Nathaniel Benchley, Robert Benchley, Ludwig Bemelmans, George Jessel, Anita Loos, John O'Hara, Irwin Shaw, Robert E. Sherwood, and others; cartoons sprinkled throughout by Charles Addams, Peter Arno, Sidney Hoff, James Thurber, William Stieg, and others; introductions by Frank Knox, Secretary of the Navy and Rear Admiral Adolphus Andrews.
