Soft cover. Condizione: Good. Mrs French and James McDonnell are brother and sister. Her name is Harriett and she is Josephine's aunt. James McDonnell was married to a Scottish lady who died and he is a widower with Josehine his only daughter. The first two letters are from James to his sister Harriett and were written in Paris on March 26th and June 18th, 1813 respectively. He has come to Paris from New York on business and is stuck there because of the war between the British and the Americans. It lasted from 1812-1815. he is obviously a merchant and he has bought some port which he has to sell before he can return to New York.However with the war commerce is badly affected. In both letters he speaks of his daughter who he has left at school near the city of New York at a nunnery lately established by some nuns at the Ursuline Convent at Cork. In the second letter he writes more about Josephine and responds to his sister's offer to look after her also of her apparent criticism in a letter about the religious. On his reteirn to New York presumably in 1815 he gave one of Harriett's letters to Josephine and at in 1816 Josephine writes a number of letters to her aunt in which she tells of happenings in her life and her father's. She mentions him going on a trip to Ohio where he is thinking of settling and she "speaks" too about her cousins (Harrietts's daughters) and of both her father and her own desire to someday travel to Ireland to visit them in Roscommon. In her last letter she speaks of meeting a young Sctch man who has asked her father for permission to marry him and she explains of his reaction and the story enfolds. An interesting batch of letters that reflect aspects of the life of a well travelled Irish emigrant from Cork and his daughter. The last couple of letters are from new Jersey and the very last one is from Pavonia, which is in New Jersey. The letters from the daughter are all addressed to Mrs French, French Lawn, Ballinamoe, Co. Roscommon. Not sure which Mr. French Hariett married, but would benefit from further research. A small bit of unique Irish history.
