Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 2nd Edition. 1924 Book on Proper Infant Care: New York State Baby Book, New York State Department of Health, Division of Maternity, Infancy & Child Hygiene, Circular Number 10 . Infant Diet and Nutrition. Pregnancy & Motherhood. Maternity Dos and Don'ts. This book, the "New York State Baby Book" was an important measure taken by the state to facilitate healthful procedures and sound psychological atmosphere for new born infants from birth through the crucial first year. It was published by the New York State Department of Health (under the supervision of Commissioner Matthias Nicoll, Jr.) This copy, issued in 1924, was revised by the Division of Maternity, Infancy and Child Hygiene Florence L. McKay, Director. The book, a paperback in stapled pamphlet format, is designated as Circular No. 10. The book was just about as complete a program as was possible for the state to present, providing , as it did, with complete instructions to soon-to-be mothers. I'm sure the information was welcomed, especially by first time mothers. Perusing the book, which is illustrated with handsome, vignette, line drawings and monochrome halftone photographs, one is impressed by the amount of information on maternity and infant care, and the steady-handed authority of the individuals who devised the text. It is obvious thy cared about the subject matter. For all that, the book is also a touchstone for the era in which it was published - the Roaring Twenties. Things have changed since then, as medical science and knowledge of infant needs have far advanced beyond that now distant year of 1924 . almost a hundred years ago! It is certainly not meant as a current guide for any persons living today. It is sold only for its historical significance. On the rear cover is a quotation from John Burns : " Give us intelligent motherhood and good prenatal conditions, and I have no doubt of the future of this or any other nation." The avowed aim of the book was the reduction in numbers of infant mortality. At the top of the title page is this statement : " Public Health is Purchasable. Within Natural Limitations Any Community Can Determine Its Own Death Rate."
