Par un membre de… l'Académie des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de Besançon. Dédié à cette Académie. Besançon, Charles Deis, imprimeur-libraire, 1843 1 volume in-8 (21 x 13 cm), VI-90-(1) pages. Bien complet du feuillet d'errata à la fin. Reliure demi-veau brun, roulettes dorées, plats de papier marbré, dos muet (reliure d'époque qui a sans doute servi de remboîtage). Bon état général. Reliure solide, de l'époque et décorative. Imprimé sur papier vélin. Quelques petites taches sans importance. Complet. ÉDITION ORIGINALE. DÉDICACE AU VERSO DU FAUX-TITRE "Hommage de l'auteur." [signature illisible]. Cet ouvrage rare a certainement du être imprimé à très petit nombre pour l'auteur et ses amis de l'Académie de Besançon. "Poème curieux et anecdotique sur les avantages et les inconvénients du mariage et du célibat." (Gay, 181). Ce livre que n'a pas cité Octave Uzanne dans son Paroissien du Célibataire (1890) mérite pourtant qu'on s'y arrête en plus d'un endroit. "A vingt ans, comme tous ceux de mon âge, je ne voyais dans le mariage, que du bonheur. Forcé bientôt d'admettre une foule d'exceptions, je m'avisai de regarder plus attentivement autour de moi, et je reconnus, avec effroi, que, parmi tant d'époux, les heureux formaient le petit nombre. [.] je me mis à observer encore [.] et je finis par rester convaincu que l'on peut être heureux dans le mariage, et qu'en général ceux qui ne le sont point ne peuvent s'en prendre qu'à eux-mêmes. Tel est le résultat de mes observations, tel est le sujet de ce petit ouvrage que je pourrais appeler l'Examen de conscience des gens mariés, et que j'offre surtout aux gens à marier. [.]" D'après Michaud (Biographie universelle), cet ouvrage serait de M. Pierre-François Trémolières, né en 1774 à Paris mais qui fit ses études à Besançon. Il devient membre de plusieurs sociétés savantes de cette ville et y meurt en juillet 1847. Ses oeuvres sont un mélange de "finesse et de bonhommie, d'élégance et de simplicité." Poème divisé en trois chants. Premières folies, jeune vieillard, débauches, humeur, tolérance, fortune ou amour, cupidité, laideur, avortons, vieux mari, vieille femme, rival, illusions amoureuses, misère, secondes noces, plaisir et peine, frais de noces, lune de miel, amour négligé, excès d'amour, enfants, belles-mères, conclusion : célibat ! autant de titres de poésies bien tournées sur le sujet. TRÈS BON EXEMPLAIRE. TRÈS RARE POUR NE PAS DIRE INTROUVABLE . Dédicacé par l'auteur.

In addition, five largeish oval & circular tan patches over gutter between pages 14 & 15 of Vol. II, persisting with diminishing effect & extent over gutters up to pages 38 & 39 and over gutters back to that between verso of half-title and title-page; confined to inner margins, except to varying lightish degrees over folds of three double-page plates - Pl. 81 Vüe de la Ville de Canton, Pl. 82 Mandarin accompagné de ses Bourreaux, and Pl. 83 Convoi Chinois - none of which too adversely affected. Lower margin of double-page Pl. 1 (Plan de Pondichery, in Vol. I) cropped, affecting 3-column alphabetical key in form of losses to final line ('M') of central column and to line of print beneath final line ('R') of key in right-hand column; both lines illegible, key otherwise complete. Spines of bindings with five lightly raised bands, gilt titles and volume numbers on paler tan leather labels, and gilt date at tails. Spine of Vol. I in poor condition, being rubbed & grazed, with surface loss, tears at head and tail, and open splits from head to tail corresponding to breaks in book-block. Spine of Vol II rubbed & grazed, with surface splits and loss. Hinges of Vol. I rubbed; hinges of Vol. II worn, front hinge being split from head to tail and rear almost completely so. Boards rubbed and marked, with variable wear at corners. Front board of Vol. II detached together with flyleaf and half-title; rear board only very loosely held (or as good as detached). Original endpapers adhesive-stained at upper-, fore- and lower edges; rear endpapers of Vol. II completely split along hinge, rear endpapers of Vol. I almost completely so. Top edges of text-blocks darkly tinted, other edges age-toned. A classic of natural history and of exploration & discovery in India, the East Indies, the Far East, and elsewheres. Despite the number of flaws, a FAIR / ACCEPTABLE copy worthy of restoration and of full or partial rebind.
