E i documenti della polemica, visti in una nuova prospettiva, corroborano le sue parole. A lato del conflitto teologico e ideologico, in un àmbito di sapienza classica, precristiana, e concreta, gli Adagia di Erasmo sono un successo editoriale europeo, che in Italia resisterà anche alla censura; riempiono le biblioteche, e talvolta ne escono sotto forma di immagini. Allo Stato di Milano e a Ferrara conducono le diverse testimonianze visive nella scultura, nella pittura, nelle epigrafi dei proverbi che Erasmo aveva fatto rivivere, ora decifrate e indagate in un percorso di ricerca che privilegia gli emblemi. Gli archivi e le biblioteche restituiscono dispersi documenti dell'opera di Alberto Pio nell'articolata controversia con Erasmo, e le lettere che il principe scrisse o che gli furono indirizzate. Indispensabile alla costruzione della biografia del politico e del diplomatico, oltre che dell'uomo di cultura, l'ampio epistolario di Pio attendeva di essere ordinato. Il catalogo delle numerose lettere di Alberto Pio e dei suoi corrispondenti stampate, anche parzialmente, in varie sedi, dal quale prenderà avvìo la pubblicazione di quelle ancora inedite (anticipata qui da alcune lettere in volgare), colma ora la lacuna. Delle sedici illustrazioni fuori testo che il volume accoglie, quattordici sono parte integrante degli studi; due mostrano affreschi del palazzo dei Pio a Carpi, «sede principesca del Rinascimento».
