Prima edizione
Early printing. [6], 73 pages plus covers. Large paperback; H 30.5cm x L 22.75cm. Tan dust jacket with front panel decorative motif by famed book designer Merle Armitage; dj top edge trimmed fractionally shorter than the book's paper covers. Mild soiling and staining to dj front and rear panels with nicks and short tears along top edges, spine paper toned with head chipped and heel nicked. Brown paper covers with heel nicked. Past owner's personal bookplate on front cover's blank verso. Some foxing and toning on initial and terminal leaves; occasional light soiling and foxing at fore-edge margins of interior leaves with stray ink mark on page 47. Old white cloth tape strips applied along front and rear hinges reinforcing otherwise strong binding. Text inclusive to page 20 with one figure illustration; pages 21-73 feature twenty-six plates of which most are b/w but with three in color. Although this copy has a 1943 imprint corresponding to the publication's first printing, bibliographer Robert M. Purcell states that the Merle Armitage dj was added to a 1946 second printing in order to spur sales (see "Merle Armitage Was Here! A Retrospective of a 20th Century Renaissance Man"). A very good copy in a very good- dust jacket.
