Une sé…rie B est à l'origine un long métrage tourné avec un petit budget de production, distribué sans campagne publicitaire, et projeté en première partie d'un double programme soit deux films par séance au prix d'un seul. Les films étaient très courants durant l'âge d'or d'Hollywood. Depuis le déclin puis l'abandon des séries B, à la fin des années 1950, le terme est utilisé dans un sens plus large, désignant tous les films à faible budget, exception faite des essais et des films pornographiques. Le terme de série B ne désigne pas un genre cinématographique à proprement parler: les westerns sont fréquents à l'âge d'or des séries B, ainsi que les films de science-fiction et d'horreur à petits budgets, qui ont gagné en popularité vers la fin des années 1950. A l'origine, les séries B sont souvent des séries, plus courtois qu'un film, d'une durée moyenne de 70 minutes, pour les célébrités exécutées à plusieurs reprises le même personnage. Les dernières séries B ont inspiré quelques suites, mais les séries B sont moins courantes. De la même manière que les films, la durée moyenne des séries B a augmenté au fil du temps.
