As the winner of the Prix de Rome (1906) and the Damprijsvraag (1908), he was regarded in his time as a promising, up-and-coming talent. Early in his career, he received the commission for what would become his most famous creation: Het Scheepvaarthuis (1911), a luxury office building for six shipping companies. In that same year, he joined the Public Works Department in Amsterdam as an aesthetic advisor. Here, Van der Meij realized a large number of bridges, utilitarian buildings, and urban planning schemes, making grateful use of the new building materials and techniques (such as photography) that the modern era offered him. During this turbulent period, full of political and economic crises, Amsterdam grew from a provincial town into a modern city. Van der Meij contributed to this with his designs for many housing complexes in the twentieth-century expansion districts. Architectural historian Michiel Kruidenier and designer Paul Smeets examine Van der Meij's role within the Amsterdam School and Dutch architectural history using countless previously unpublished drawings, letters, and photographs.
