Please note that a previous owner has marked out a paragraph in ink and the mark extends to the fore-edge of the page block [please see scans]. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour-printed dustwrapper that has not been price-clipped, showing the original publisher's printed price of 25s net. The dustwrapper is complete without any chips or tears - just the top corner of the front flap is creased. A few sporadic foxing spots, and a small ink mark to the front panel. Orange titles to the spine of the dustwrapper are slightly faded. ***204mm x 138mm. 224 pages. ***'During the wave of arbitrary mass arrests that afflicted the Communist countries of Eastern Europe under Stalin a few years after the Second World War, Jiri Mucha, one of Czechoslovakia's best known writers, suddenly found himself in prison. After months of solitary confinement, during which the authorities did their best to break his nerve, he was sentenced to six years' imprisonment. This book is the diary he kept during the first year of his sentence, served in a coal mine. It was written at intervals in small notebooks kept hidden down the pit and smuggled out piecemeal by a friendly miner. ***It is a shocking but nonetheless humorous record of the world in which he found himself, which he shared with men of all backgrounds and every type of political and non-political offence. The picture he gives us is of humanity reduced to its elements through deprivation and suffering. After the war he returned to Czechoslovakia and published several novels and his war diary, Fire Braves Fire, before his arrest for alleged espionage in 1951. Since his release in 1954,he has published Black and White New York, the novel Probable Face, a volume of short stories, and two books on the Art Nouveau.''
