Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. WHAT HAPPENED TO GREEN BEAR WHO WAS BLESSED WITH A SACRED PACK (Anthropological Papers, No. 4, reprinted chapter from Bulletin 119, Bureau of American Ethnology), translated by Truman Michelson, softcover, 1938. ITEM CONDITION: near fine. The text block is in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. Saddle-stapled. The gray wraps are in very good condition. 9 x 6, 14 pages, 6 ounces XX (From the introduction) This account of a Sauk sacred pack was written in the current syllabic script by a Fox Indian, now deceased, many years ago. I have purposely adhered closely to the Indian original. Any marked deviations are enclosed in parentheses. In 1924 Harry Lincoln told me that the sacred pack was among the Indians at Tama, Iowa, until 1897, when it was returned to the Sauk. He adds that the attached performance was something like the Thunder dance of the bear gens. The ritualistic origin myth is similar to Fox myths. XX Note [from Wikipedia]: A sacred pack must be the same as a sacred bundle or a medicine bundle, a wrapped collection of sacred items, held by a designated carrier, used in Indigenous American ceremonial cultures. According to Patricia Deveraux, a member of the Blackfoot Confederacy in Alberta, these are holy bundles given to us by the Creator to hold our people together. They're the same as the relics from the Catholic Church. They are a demonstration of the holy spirit. They can heal people.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. Reprint. Brand new and unread; very fresh and bright condition; gift quality! Gold and black wrapper with white lettering. 152 very crisp and clean new and unread informative and historical pages! "The following tales were collected by the late Dr. William Jones in 1903. It is possible that some of them were collected during his visit at the Carlisle Indian School in February; but it is clear that some were collected from James Down, a Kickapoo lad from that school, in New York in May and June. A letter, dated April 15th 1913, from Superintendent Friedman to me gives the name of the Kickapoo lad, though he states the records do not show for what purpose the latter was in New York. A slip of paper inside one of the note books containing the Kickapoo tales gives a list of the Kickapoo and Sauk and Fox (of Oklahoma: hence presumably really Sauk) children at the school when Dr. Jones visited the institution. This fact coupled with passages in Rideout's life, makes it not quite certain where the material was gathered. It may be noted that the Kickapoo here resented is of the so-called Mexican band." ---- from the Introduction.
