Trade paperback. Condizione: Good. xiii, [3], 684, [4] pages. Illustrations. Tabular Data. Exercises. Footnotes. Formulae. References. Name Index. Subject Index. Embossed stamp of previous owner, Dr. Robert Hanrahan, on the title page! Some marks to pages noted. Robert Hanrahan Ph.D., JD, worked on nuclear weapons science and engineering since 1991, first at Los Alamos National Laboratory and from 2007 until his untimely death as a federal employee of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA.) Gerhart Friedlander (July 28, 1916 September 6, 2009) was an American nuclear chemist who worked on the Manhattan Project. Friedlander fled Nazi Germany for the United States in 1936. After emigrating, he studied with Glenn Seaborg at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a Ph.D. in 1942. In 1943, he joined the Manhattan Project, and in 1944 became the leader of the radioactive lanthanum (RaLa) group in the Chemistry Division. After the war, he was a research associate at General Electric from 1946-1948, and spent the bulk of his career at Brookhaven National Laboratory, where he served as head of the chemistry department between 1968 and 1977. He developed models that remained in use at the time of his death. Joseph William Kennedy (May 30, 1916 May 5, 1957) was an American chemist who co-discovered plutonium, along with Glenn T. Seaborg, Edwin McMillan, and Arthur Wahl. During World War II, he led the CM (Chemistry and Metallurgy) Division at the Manhattan Project's Los Alamos Laboratory, where he oversaw research onto the chemistry and metallurgy of uranium and plutonium. For nearly 50 years, Ed Macias' professional life has been focused on Washington University in St. Louis, where he has served in many key leadership roles, including 25 years as provost, the university's chief academic officer. Dr. Macias joined the Arts & Sciences faculty in 1970 as an assistant professor of chemistry and became a full professor in 1984. In the 1980s, he added administrative roles to his full-time teaching and research, serving as chair of the Department of Chemistry. The author of two books and more than 90 articles, his research interests include environmental and nuclear chemistry, focusing on the chemistry and physics of atmospheric particles. Julian Malcolm Miller (1922-1976) was an American educator. Member faculty, Columbia, New York City, 1949-1976, professor of chemistry, 1960-1976, department chairman, 1970-1973. Consultant Brookhaven National Laboratory, 1950-1976. National Science Foundation fellow, 1965; Fellow American Physical Society; member American Chemical Society, American Academy Arts and Sciences. The only single source guide to radiation chemistry has now been expanded to include new material on applied radiation chemistry and experimental methods, as well as gaseous and solid systems. Other enhancements include broadened coverage of chemical reactions initiated by high-energy and their commercial applications, as well as new topics related to kinetics and experimental procedures. The Third Edition features numerical data in Sl units, simplifying most radiation-chemical calculations, an expanded problem section, and key references updated to reflect recent research. This third edition represents the progress of knowledge since the initial publication of the first edition. This work represents an important 'measurement point' as it can be compared with the earlier editions to identify changes in scope, content, and knowledge and can also serve as a revised baseline against which to make similar comparisons against later editions. The ability to analyze such changes in editions over time is an important tool and technique in addressing key issues in the evolution of curriculum and when significant 'new knowledge' became sufficiently well accepted to become featured in major textbooks. Third Edition [stated]. Eighth printing [stated].
