Softcover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition (softcover issue). [a nice clean as-new book, in flawless condition]. (Wisconsin/Warner Bros. Screenplay Series) Series Trade PB (B&W photographs) Another entry in this outstanding series of published screenplays of classic Warner Bros. films, this one presenting the full script for (in the words of the editor) "a first-rate swashbuckling adventure film that is literate, lavish, and imaginative." Editor Behlmer's typically erudite introduction presents a well-documented and very readable account of the film's conception and production, which also touches briefly on the already well-established swashbuckling tradition in early films. The film, released in 1940, starred Errol Flynn, Brenda Marshall and Claude Rains, was directed by Michael Curtiz, and featured one of the most glorious music scores in cinema history, by the great Erich Wolfgang Korngold. (You should seek out the soundtrack album and play it while reading this script!) (xx).

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. With 8 Plates in Colour / 70 Illustrations (illustratore). Undated though first release doubtless timed to the October, 1938 U.K. release of this (for the time) big-budget Warner Brothers Technicolor production, starring Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, & the lovely Olivia De Havilland. (The other "Regal Series Film Books" advertised here include "Rogues of Sherwood Forest" (1950), "Tom Brown's School Days" (1951) and the photoplay edition of the Renown Pictures version of "Scrooge" (1951), giving us our most likely print date.) Colors to both glossy front board and full-color jacket remain vivid, here, though we grade this uncommon jacket "fair" only -- the top third of the rear panel has been torn away and lost, while horizontal strips have been removed from both top and bottom of front panel, the rough edges of those excisions possibly indicating bug chews. This book also smells a bit musty to us, as do many books which arrive here in the desert from the British Isles. Bookplate to FFE dated 1963 shows this copy was awarded to one Robert Clarke for his diligence at the Forest Side Methodist SS (Sunday School?) But the oddest thing about the illustrations, here, is that this TECHNICOLOR film is represented almost entirely by BLACK-AND-WHITE production stills. Even the eight COLOR plates have clearly resulted from having an artist take eight of the B&W stills and simply PAINT THEM OVER. Yes, generating color "publicity" transparencies from a film shot in the original "three strip" Technicolor process might have been a bit cumbersome, but this is still a head-scratcher. Meantime, Ward, Lock clearly issued two versions of this coveted, large-format (7-1/2-X-10-inch) U.K. photoplay edition, this one (70 illustrations, eight in color), and a thicker version bragging 100 illustrations, 16 of them being color plates. (The boards and jackets of these two versions are not identical; the foliage to front panel is different, especially over Mr. Flynn's right shoulder.) Which is the earlier we don't know, though this "8 plates in colour" version (with all eight color plates being in place, as called for) would appear to be less common. 96 pp., reduced from $147.

Seven studio still photographs from the 1977 film. A young orphan, raised by his dysfunctional hillbilly family, befriends a goofy dragon in this live-action animated musical. It was the first animated Disney film in which none of the legendary "nine old men" were involved in the animation process. Ken Anderson created the beloved dragon, loosely modeling him after historical Asian imagery. Shot on location in California. 10 x 8 inches. Poor, with a synopsis typed on the verso of three, a stamp to the verso of three, and light warping overall. Soiling, red manuscript annotations, and dampstaining throughout.

From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s. [nice tight clean book, with no discernible wear; the jacket has just a touch of scuffing on the front panel, slight wear at upper rear hinge]. (Wisconsin/Warner Bros. Screenplay Series) Series (B&W photographs) Typically excellent entry in this screenplay series, with an erudite introduction by noted scholar Rudy Behlmer, containing not only copious details about this production, but background on the Robin Hood legend and a brief discussion of other film treatments of same -- a topic about which, it should be noted, Mr. Behlmer was extremely knowledgeable. This, of course, is (as far as I'm concerned) the definitive Robin Hood movie, with Errol Flynn and a perfect supporting cast, one of the great movie scores (by Erich Wolfgang Korngold), and enough terrific moments, visual and verbal, for half-a-dozen movies. "Why -- you speak treason!" "Fluently." [The only problem with this series is its failure to give the names of the actual SCREENWRITERS the prominence they deserve -- their names are on neither the books' covers nor their title pages, but only on the first page of the scripts themselves. Tsk.] Uncommon in the hardcover printing.
