This anonymous poem by John Phillips was registered as work by Edward Phillips, his brother. Two issues appeared in 1654-1655. It reappeared in 1661 entitled THE RELIGION OF THE HYPOCRITICAL PRESBYTERIANS IN MEETER. A revised and enlarged edition in 1671 with the original title, A SATYR AGAINST HYPOCRITES; but it was this 1710 appearance which first attributed this poem to John Milton, the author's uncle. "Various "major additions and revisions were in the direction of greater licentiousness . it appears to have been, in reality, little more than the irresponsible outburst of a young man of twenty-three who was tired of discipline, disappointed in his expectations of political prferment, and angry at the sort of people who had taken over the country but who seemed incapable of appreciating his peculiar talentsl" - Prof. Leon Howard.
