Mitford, Reader in Archaeology in the University of St. Andrews, and sometime member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, presents a comprehensive study of all known inscriptions from the ancient city of Kourion on the island of Cyprus. These date from the seventh, perhaps the eighth century B.C., through the Classical, Hellenistic, and Imperial Roman periods, to the early Byzantine era. The finds are fully illustrated by photographs and line drawings. Tables of syllabic signs include the signaries of Archaic Kourion, the Treasure of Kourion, Classical Kourion, Archaic and Classical Paphos, and the Common Cypriot Signary of the Classical Period. A full bibliography, a concordance of the inscriptions, and plans of archaeological sites are provided, the whole forming a richly annotated & illustrated corpus of Kourion & its environs." The 34 pieces in the trove are tableware of a variety of types from the Roman period. The best known is perhaps the Great Dish with a diameter of 60 cm. and a weight of 8 kilos. The material of tthe utensils tends to be 95% silver. In these 24 pages, assisted by 8 (or more) b/w photographs, you will LEARN more about : incision, West Row, Coleraine, thyrsus, pondo, vine-scroll, centering marks, and waste-wax. Cond : Card wrapper is white with black lettering. Front cover graphic (b/w) is of platter No. 03 - which likely date from the fourth century A.D. Staples tight but one corner bumped. Minimal soiling. No names but minor marks by p/o on title page and page 04. No tears. Great reference !! Quote (p.16) : " Again, the ornament might have been carved out of solid sheet metal. A third method has been suggested by Mr. Herbert Maryon, and is discussed further on in this section. By this method , the background would have been hammerd down from the front, leaving the figures in relief. Ornament produced by carving or ._._._. ." Size: 8vo.
