Los materiales de seda recientemente regenerados se han utilizado para formar una variedad de biomateriales como geles, esponjas y películas para aplicaciones médicas. En particular, la fibroína de seda se ha estudiado cada vez más para nuevas aplicaciones biomédicas debido a la biocompatibilidad, la lenta degradabilidad y las notables propiedades mecánicas del material. Además, la capacidad de controlar la estructura y la morfología molecular mediante opciones versátiles de procesamiento y modificación de la superficie ha ampliado la utilidad de esta proteína en una serie de aplicaciones de biomateriales y de ingeniería tisular como el hueso, los ligamentos y los cartílagos, así como los tejidos conectivos como la piel. Actualmente, los biomateriales basados en la seda están disponibles comercialmente en el mercado, como el andamio quirúrgico SERI®, la malla quirúrgica de seda, la sutura de seda, la seda Restylane y el sistema de protección embólica Silk Road.
