Dieses Werk bringt einen ausführlichen Überblick über die B…eziehungen zwischen Literatur und Musik, insbesondere über den Einfluß des Musikalischen auf die Gestaltung literarischer Werke. Mit der Bedeutung des Musikalischen in der Literatur ist mithin nicht so sehr das praktische Verhältnis der Dichter zur Musik als Ausübende oder Zuhörer gemeint, sondern ein mehr innertätiges Bedürfnis nach Musik als einer Klangwelt, der zahlreiche Dichter bewußt oder unbewußt in ihren Dichtungen erliegen. Dabei geht es dem Verfasser sowohl um die Bedeutung musikalischer Formen und Stilmittel in der Literatur als auch um die theoretischphilosophische Begründung dieser Liebe zur Musik. Es zeigt sich, daß das Verhältnis eines Dichters zur Musik zugleich Aufschluß über sein Verhältnis zur Welt zu geben vermag. Indem der Künstler sich maßvoll, kontrollierend und distanzierend verhält oder sich bedürftig und hingebungsvoll bis zur inneren Auflösung dem Musikalischen ergibt und ihm verfällt, erweist sich sein "klassisches" oder , romantisches Lebensgefühl. In der Weite des Rahmens, der Fülle des Materials und in ihren Problemstellungen ist Mittenzweis Untersuchung - die durchaus als ein erstes Bemühen auf bisher kaum erforschtem Gebiet verstanden werden will - ein aufschlußreiches Werk, das viele Anregungen zu weiterer Forschung bietet.
