From literature study, palm oil biodiesel is a relatively clean-burning, renewable fuel that fits nicely into the current energy portfolio with little restructuring. It is also nontoxic, biodegradable, and has a higher flashpoint than diesel. This further reduces the greenhouse effect compared to conventional diesel. Palm biodiesel is a green fuel with zero carbon emissions meaning that carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas, which is emitted during the combustion using palm biodiesel is absorbed by the palm oil tree thus making it neutral. Experimental measurements performed on a laboratory model… using Particle Image Velocimetry deliver details of flow structure, important for optimization of combustor geometry and verification of numerical models. Three-dimensional, viscous, turbulent, isothermal flow characteristics of this combustor model were simulated via Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) code. The effects of swirlers and mass flow rate were examined. Details of the complex flow structure such as vortices and recirculation zones were obtained by the simulation model. The computational model predicts a major recirculation zone in the central region immediately downstream of the fuel nozzle and a second recirculation zone in the upstream corner of the combustion chamber which is consistent with the experimental results.

This monograph highlights the influence of applying air staging technique in reducing the gaseous emissions from a fluidized bed combustor. In this investigation, palm shell is used as the source of fuel and silica sand as the inert sand material. This monograph describes the results obtained and the methodology adopted. The outcome of this investigation has shown that the use of the air staging technique has resulted in the reduction of the emission of NOx of more than 50%. This significant reduction is a clear indication of the prospect of using this technology for sustainable management of the environment and a better future for our palm oil industry.
