Leur style malicieux et spirituel leur attira les foudres de l'Eglise, qui tenta sans succès de les faire censurer par la Sorbonne. Les Noëls eurent néanmoins un succès prodigieux et ils furent fredonnés jusqu'à la Cour. Ils demeurent l'une des meilleures oeuvres rédigées en dialecte bourguignon.
