Around the fire gather many nations of the world, some angry, some at peace. The nations' emissaries accept invitations to stand together at the Fork-in-the-Road Indian Poetry Store and turn rhythmically to the four cardinal directions, so that the earth can regain its balance. Facing East, the ambassadors see Flags of Mercy hanging over New York City and Nagasaki, then encounter and embrace a manic-depressive Native Hawaiian-Cherokee medicine man in Oklahoma City. Traveling closer to the moon and stars they fly with a dreamer in the Garden of the Bumblebees, and they listen in Weleetka, Oklahoma, to the last two living speakers of Yuchi. Turning North, the councilors ice skate with post-Vietnam revolutionaries on glacier lakes in Idaho. They chase grouse in snow two feet deep, ponder dormancy in hyphenated winters and university libraries, and learn the best way to build a fall fire. Facing West, they lie on cool, creek bed vulvas of earth in sweltering Great Plains summer, navigate a wilderness river in canoes, and kiss a lover at dawn in the Chihuahan desert. Finally, turning in the divine direction South, the emissaries hear The Story of The Seeds, a journey back to 1540, to the conquest of Mabila by De Soto. In a stream of survival, they emigrate with Choctaws on trails of tears from Mississippi to Oklahoma, before sharing big ripe melons in the delta of the Vegetable River. They finish their revolution facing east again, just before dawn.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. A very crisp and clean used copy; almost new and unread condition; gift quality! Black cloth with black lettering on the spine and front board. 232 very clean unmarked and uncreased historical and informative pages nicely enhanced by black and white photographs and illustrations! "Riding Out the Storm: 19th-Century Chickasaw Governors; Their Lives and Intellectual Legacy profiles the lives of three nineteenth-century Chickasaw governors?Cyrus Harris, Winchester Colbert, and William L. Byrd. Revealing the three leaders not merely as historic politicians, but as human beings, Phillip Carroll Morgan portrays their personal and political lives against literary backdrops relating directly to their experiences?Cyrus Harris with his northern Mississippi neighbors, the Faulkners; Civil War governor Winchester Colbert with Native American literature about war; and William L. Byrd with his great-grandniece Jodi A. Byrd's twenty-first-century indigenous critiques of colonialism. The tenures of these governors span the period from the reorganization of the post-Removal Chickasaw Nation as a republic in 1856 until 1892, the end of William Byrd's second term. Featuring historic photographs from the Chickasaw archives, Riding Out the Storm illustrates the intellectual history of the Chickasaws, offering new views on the rich legacy of the tribe's mythos and personalities in northern Mississippi and the Civil War in Indian Territory. It also examines the constant siege by settlers and entrepreneurs on the Chickasaws and their lands, leading to the Dawes Act of 1887, or General Allotment Act?the heart of a strategy meant to break up American Indian nations once and for all.".
