Present to the FFEP). Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. First Edition of this US WW11 Bombardment Group Unit History of the famous "Air Apaches". The book covers the period from the formation of the Bombardment Group in 1942 through 1945. The 345th Bombardment Group operated in the Southwest Pacific as a North American B-25 Mitchell Medium Bomber Unit and was assigned to the 5th Air Force. The 345th bombed and strafed Japanese Airfields and installations in New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago, missions from Moresby, Dobadura, New Guinea, Nadzab in the Markham Valley, Biak, Tacloban, San Marcelino, missions on Rabaul, New Britain, the South Philippines and Luzon, some missions over Kyushu and was selected to escort the Japanese Surrender Party from Japan to Ie Shima. The unit was inactivated December 29,1945. The 345th Bombardment Group was composed of Four Squadrons "The 498th "Falcons", the 499th "Bats Outa Hell", the 500th "Rough Riders" and the 501st "Black Panthers". The 345th Bombardment Group was the First Full US Air Force Combat Group sent to the Pacific in WW11 and was awarded 4 US Distinguished Unit Citations and one of the most decorated units in WW11. The unit history covers their activation and combat in the Southwest Pacific with sections on each of the four Squadrons combat history. The book contains many great black and white photos of unit officers, some group photos and mission photos, Pacific base photos, damage to unit aircraft photos, some cartoon style photos and attractive bluish-toned illustrations of the four squadron insignias etc. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
