These chronological stages which unfortunately are often taken into consideration separately, have been bridged. The editors? introduction and a picture of the theoretical framework of Mediterranean studies, are followed by five geographical parts. Each of them is introduced by a senior scholar?s comprehensive overview article followed by papers of highly competent younger researchers. By commenting on cultural changes and interculturality in the sub-regions of the Mediterranean, new important insights into interregional mobility, connectivity, and decentering phenomena are provided. Simone Muhl geht in ihrer Untersuchung zur wechselseitigen Geschichte des mittleren Osttigrisgebiets von archaologischem Material aus Notgrabungen des irakischen Antikendienstes in der Umgebung von Assur, der ersten Hauptstadt des assyrischen Reiches, aus. Um Aspekte kultureller Unterschiede oder Gemeinsamkeiten der Kulturgruppen nordlich und sudlich des Kleinen Zab naher zu beleuchten, werden die Funde und Befunde dieser Untersuchungen in einen regionalen und uberregionalen Kontext eingebettet. Zudem wird die Analyse des archaologischen Materials mit der Fernerkundung der Region anhand von Satellitenbildaufnahmen kombiniert. Dabei wird die Landschaft auf anthropogen verursachte Veranderungen untersucht und es konnten beispielsweise 1672 Tell- und Flachsiedlungen lokalisiert sowie das antike Verkehrs- und Bewasserungsnetz in erhaltenen Teilen kartiert, rekonstruiert und kontextualisiert werden.
