Ephemera. Condizione: Very good. Illustrations/diagram. Format is approximately six inches by 27 inches, tri-folded resulting in six panels of approximately 6 inches by 9 inches. John Bull is a British-built railroad steam locomotive that operated in the United States. It was operated for the first time on September 15, 1831, and it became the oldest operable steam locomotive in the world when the Smithsonian Institution operated it in 1981. The John Bull was initially purchased by and operated for the Camden and Amboy Railroad, the first railroad in New Jersey, which gave John Bull the number 1. The C&A used the locomotive heavily from 1833 until 1866, when it was removed from active service. The Pennsylvania Railroad refurbished and operated the locomotive a few times for public displays: it was fired up for the Centennial Exposition in 1876 and again for the National Railway Appliance Exhibition in 1883. In 1884 the locomotive was purchased by the Smithsonian Institution as the museum's first major industrial exhibit. The Smithsonian commemorated the locomotive's 150th birthday in 1981 by firing it up, making it the world's oldest surviving operable steam locomotive. The John Bull is on display in the National Museum of American History . The National Museum of American History planned to operate the John Bull under its own power on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the engine's first movement under steam. This work was produced in connection with this planned event. Readers seeking additional information were referred to a work written by John White, Curator of Transportation for the Smithsonian. This leaflet describes one of the very first American steam locomotives, the John Bull. It briefly discusses its construction in England in 1831, its acquisition by the Smithsonian in 1885, and the study and testing program associated with the successful plan for the John Bull to run again in 1981 on its 150th birthday. This book provides a detailed account of the life and career of James Millholland, a leading figure in the early development of the American railroad. The author traces Millholland's journey from his apprenticeship as a machinist to his position as master mechanic of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, where he made significant contributions to locomotive design and engineering. The book explores the challenges faced by early railroad engineers in adapting steam power to the unique conditions of American geography and industry. Millholland's work on cast-iron crank axles, wooden springs, and anthracite coal-burning locomotives is examined in depth, highlighting his innovative approach to solving practical problems. Beyond his mechanical contributions, Millholland also played a key role in the development of railroad bridges, as evidenced by his construction of the plate-girder bridge in 1847. The book situates Millholland's work within the broader context of American industrial development, showcasing his role as a pioneer in the field of railroad engineering. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
