"Days of '41 is a nostalgic, reflective, and warmly personal recollection of one young American's life in Hawaii during the year preceding the Japanese air and submarine attack of December 7, 1941, on the United States' naval base at Pearl Harbor. For the author and his friends (all of whom worked at the base) that prewar period was a magical one, full of the pleasures of living in what seemed to them to be an eternally self-renewing island paradise. But their idyll ended on that Sunday morning when Japanese bombs fell upon Pearl Harbor. The author intersperses in his narrative the story of the planning of the Japanese military stratagists and concludes his book with the horrifying and lethal events of the attack itself. As we look back now, we can see that the attack, which forced the United States to enter World War II, put an end to a period of self-absorption and innocence for not just the young man who is recalled in this work but for most Americans living at the time." - from the rear outer cover.
