Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. 'I had been mistaken for him so many times that when he died it was as if part of myself had died too.'Kevin Thunder grew up with a double - a boy so uncannily like him that they were mistaken for each other at every turn. As children in 1960s Dublin, one lived next to Bram Stoker's house, haunted by an imagined Dracula, the other in the more refined spaces of Palmerston Park. Though divided, like the city itself, by background and class, they shared the same smell, the same looks, and perhaps, as he comes to realize, the same soul. They exchange identities when it suits them, as their lives take them to England and America, and find that taking on another's personality can lead to darker places than either had imagined. Neil Jordan's long-awaited new novel is an extraordinary achievement - a comedy of manners at the same time as a Gothic tragedy, a thriller and an elegy. It offers imaginative entertainment of the highest order.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Following the award-winning BBC Radio 4 series, a panoramic exploration of peoples, objects and beliefs from the celebrated author of A History of the World in 100 Objects and Germany'Riveting, extraordinary . tells the sweeping story of religious belief in all its inventive variety. The emphasis is not on our differences, but on shared spiritual yearnings' Rachel Campbell-Johnston, The Times, Books of the YearOne of the central facts of human existence is that every society shares a set of beliefs and assumptions - a faith, an ideology, a religion - that goes far beyond the life of the individual. These beliefs are an essential part of a shared identity. They have a unique power to define - and to divide - us, and are a driving force in the politics of much of the world today. Throughout history they have most often been, in the widest sense, religious.Yet this book is not a history of religion, nor an argument in favour of faith. It is about the stories which give shape to our lives, and the different ways in which societies imagine their place in the world. Looking across history and around the globe, it interrogates objects, places and human activities to try to understand what shared beliefs can mean in the public life of a community or a nation, how they shape the relationship between the individual and the state, and how they help give us our sense of who we are.For in deciding how we live with our gods, we also decide how to live with each other.'The new blockbuster by the museums maestro Neil MacGregor . The man who chronicles world history through objects is back . examining a new set of objects to explore the theme of faith in society' Sunday Times.…

Condizione: Good. Geometry was considered until modern times to be a model science. To be developed more geometrico was a seal of quality for any endeavor, whether mathematical or not. In the 17th century, for example, Spinoza set up his Ethics in a more geometrico manner, to emphasize the perfection, certainty, and clarity of his pronouncements. Geometry achieved this status on the heels of Euclid's Elements, in which, for the first time, a theory was built up in an axiomatic-deductive manner. Euclid started with obvious axioms - he called them common notions and postulates -, statements whose validity raised no doubts in the reader's mind. His propositions followed deductively from those axioms, so that the truth of the axioms was passed on to the propositions by means of purely logical proofs. In this sense, Euclid's geometry consisted of eternal truths. Given its prominence, Euclid's Elements was also used as a textbook until the 20th Century. Today geometry has lost the central importance it had during earlier centuries, but it still is an important area of mathematics, and is truly fundamental for mathematics from a variety of points of view. The Introduction to Geometry by Ewald tries to address some of these points of view, whose significance will be examined in what follows from a historical perspective.…

Paperback. Condizione: Fair. Menace both real and imagined haunt two Dubliners in this "unsettling . . . seductive" modern Gothic "that ultimately leaves one gasping" (Irish Times). "Vampires, secrets, the mysteries of identity: the obsessions that run through the director Neil Jordan's films are at the center of his beautifully enigmatic novel . . . of two look-alike men who feed off each other's souls all their crisscrossed lives" (The New York Times). Kevin Thunder and Gerald Spain have grown up on opposite sides of the Dublin economic divide. Kevin's father is a bookie and his mother takes in lodgers on the city's impoverished northside. Gerald, a lawyer's son, is afforded a more well-heeled upbringing. Yet they share a growing awareness of each other through episodes of mistaken identity. At first, innocent enough--one approached by the other's confused girlfriend, or being called out to in the street. But Kevin is unnerved by more than a doppelganger. He lives next door to the one-time home of Bram Stoker. And the shadows of the author's evil creation, as well as those cast by a lookalike stranger, stretch far across his early years. It's only when a tragic death sends both young men down a darker path, that Kevin and Gerald are destined to meet. A "beautifully enigmatic . . . darkly luminous" (The New York Times Book Review) thriller, Mistaken is also "the best novel I've read about Dublin in years" (The Independent).…
