An exceptionally well-preserved mid-century academic text created specifically for science and engineering students who needed to read technical German literature during the post-war scientific boom. Rather than functioning as a conventional language textbook, this volume integrates G…erman grammar with scientific vocabulary, laboratory readings, and technical terminology reflecting the era when German remained an essential research language across chemistry, physics, engineering, and medicine. Early printing (publisher code '(5 L 4)' on copyright page; not a stated first printing). Written by Nelson Van de Luyster (The Citadel Military College) and Paul H. Curts (Professor Emeritus, Wesleyan University), it represents a fascinating snapshot of Cold War scientific education. Even more compelling is the remarkable provenance accompanying this copy: laid into the book is an original Carnegie Institute of Technology freshman registration schedule (Form R-718) belonging to Bruce A. MacDonald (1937-2022), Class of 1958, documenting his Spring semester coursework for his freshman year. Research indicates MacDonald later earned his Architecture degree from Carnegie, served as an architect for the City of Pittsburgh until retirement, and subsequently worked for Slippery Rock University. The reverse of the registration card contains his original handwritten geometry calculations, transforming this already attractive textbook into a tangible piece of mid-century engineering and architectural education history. The hardcover is in Near Fine+ condition, an unusually attractive survivor for a heavily used technical textbook of this vintage. Binding remains exceptionally tight and square with crisp, bright pages showing minimal age toning and no evidence of significant use. The boards retain their original sharp colors with only trivial shelf wear. An original C.I.T. Bookstore price label remains affixed to the rear board, further reinforcing its authentic Carnegie Institute provenance. There is no dust jacket, as issued. The laid-in registration schedule is likewise very well preserved, displaying normal handling with no major tears or losses. Taken together, this is an outstanding collector's copy whose historical ephemera substantially enhances both its interest and desirability.
