Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Jacket by Roland Frambes (illustratore). 1st Edition. Samuel A. Newman's How to Survive as a Prisoner of War is a detailed firsthand memoir from one of the longest-held American POWs of World War II. Captured at Guam in December 1941, Newman spent more than three years in Japanese custody, moving through Zentsuji on Shikoku Island and later the Kawasaki camps near Tokyo before liberation in 1945. His narrative offers practical insights into survival under extreme deprivation, including improvised medical practices, psychological resilience, and strategies for leadership and morale. The book also includes illustrated endpaper maps that trace Newman's movements across Guam and Japan, along with a full biographical account of the author on the rear jacket flap. This copy is the First Edition (1976), with no later printings indicated, a matching copyright date, a Franklin Publishing imprint, and design credited to Harry Green. The jacket art is by Roland Frambes, whose stark black-and-white illustration of barbed wire suits the book's subject. Printing diagnostics include the Library of Congress Catalog Card No. 76-105379 and 'Manufactured in the United States of America' on the copyright page. The book is in Fine condition, exceptionally well preserved with immaculate black boards, bright gilt spine lettering, a tight binding, and clean pages showing only the mild, natural age-toning typical of vintage paper. The dust jacket is Near Fine, unusually bright for this title, with only faint rubbing, mild toning, and one or two tiny closed tears; it remains complete and not price-clipped at 4.95. Overall, it is one of the sharpest copies likely to be found.
