Cream-coloured wrappers with stapled binding and a yellow, black, and red abstract illustration on the front cover. Title and author on cover in black letters. Another black, red, and yellow abstract illustration appears on the back cover. Alden A. Nowlan is considered one of the most important Canadian poets of the twentieth century. Born in Nova Scotia in 1933, he later moved to New Brunswick. He began writing poetry, and was first published in The Fiddlehead, a key Canadian literary magazine, by editor Fred Cogswell, who would also publish his first poetry collection in 1958. In 1967 he won the Governor General's Award for Poetry in English. In addition to poetry, he also wrote fiction, drama, and essays, although he is best known for his poetry. His poetic style was notable for its humanist focus, and its emphasis on accessibility. He wanted his poetry to be accessible to everyone, and was famously quoted as saying "if there comes a time that truck drivers read poetry mine will be the poetry they read." The name "Harry Howith" is written in black pen on the front cover, suggesting that this copy may have come from the collection of Canadian poet Harry Howith (1934-2014). This publication was limited to 300 copies. This copy is in very good condition. There is some discolouration to the edges of both the front and back covers and some tearing in the back hinge from one of the staples, but there text is unblemished and the binding remains tight.
