Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Good. xxxiii, [1], 410 pages. Endpaper map. Illustrations (Figures, Tables, Photographs). Appendixes. Bibliography. Glossary. Index. Cover has some wear and soiling. Ink marks on top edge. This is one of the Area Handbook series. Ex-library with the usual markings. Late 20th Century snapshot. Saudi Arabia, officially the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), is a country in West Asia. It covers the bulk of the Arabian Peninsula, and has a land area of about 830,000 sq. mi, making it the fifth-largest country in Asia, the second-largest in the Arab world, and the largest in West Asia and the Middle East. It is bordered by the Red Sea to the west; Jordan, Iraq, and Kuwait to the north; the Persian Gulf, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to the east; Oman to the southeast; and Yemen to the south. The Gulf of Aqaba in the northwest separates Saudi Arabia from Egypt and Israel. Saudi Arabia is the only country with a coastline along both the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. Its capital and largest city is Riyadh. The country is home to Mecca and Medina, the two holiest cities in Islam. Saudi Arabia is considered both a regional and middle power. The Saudi economy is the largest in the Middle East; the world's eighteenth-largest economy by nominal GDP and the seventeenth largest by PPP. Saudi Arabia has one of the world's youngest populations, with approximately 50 per cent of its population of 32.2 million being under 25 years old. In addition to being a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Saudi Arabia is an active and founding member of the United Nations, Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and OPEC. The Area Handbook Series produced eighty books and was originally sponsored by the U.S. Army and written by researchers affiliated with the Library's Federal Research Division. Intended for a general audience, the studies provide descriptions and analyses of lesser-known countries or regions where U.S. military forces might be deployed. Books in the series present a description and analysis of the historical setting and the social, economic, political, and national security systems and institutions of select countries throughout the world. Most books in the series deal with a single foreign country, but a few cover several countries or a geographic region. The series includes several books on countries that no longer exist in their original configurationsuch as Czechoslovakia, East Germany, the Soviet Union, Sudan, and Yugoslavia. These books remain in the series because they continue to offer valuable historical information and perspective. In some cases, studies on successor states are also part of the series. Each book was written by a multidisciplinary team of social scientists, who sought to adhere to accepted standards of scholarly objectivity. The books represent the analysis of the authors and should not be construed as an expression of an official U.S. government position, policy, or decision. Fourth Edition [stated], First Printing, [stated].
