French writer Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) is best known for his short stories written in a naturalist style. This volume presents forty-nine of approximately 250 that Maupassant wrote during his lifetime; of the forty-nine, over half of them (twenty-six) were translated by the also well-known author, Lafcadio Hearn. Complementing the text are thirty-two illustrations reproduced by means of lithography from watercolours (seventeen full-page) by Gunter Böhmer of Switzerland, who signed the volume at the colophon.
