This short novel was the first of her Irish tales. Set before 1782, a momentous period for the independence of the Dublin parliament, Thady Quirk, a servant in a big house tells us of four generations of the Rackrent family. As the Irish Catholic narrator, he recounts the decline of this Protestant landowning family who stems from Maria Edgeworth's own background. Thady's stories describe how the Irish middle class rose because of mismanagement by the Protestant elite. The novel represents a key moment in the enlargement of the autonomy of women's authorship. Narrated from a colonial point of view, Castle Rackrent indicates Edgeworth's hybridity in regard to her 'Anglo-Irishness' and heralds the beginnings of a reflection on Irish nationhood and the salient function of women in the story. My analysis will revolve around the ways in which women in Castle Rackrent demonstrate ambivalence in terms of their presence as victims and as characters whose socio-political weight indicates their evolution. Emphasis will be laid on how women are regarded as victims of a patriarchal system in which, at the same time, they use as a model to acquire economic independence while the landlords fall from grace and lose their prestige.

Such a deconstructionist discourse on negative identity is redundant but also contradictory. This study aims at exploring the fundamental question of multiple identities in Samuel Beckett's fictions and dramas, particularly The Unnamable from the trilogy, Waiting for Godot, Endgame, Krapp's Last Tape and other relevant works. As a novelist, playwright and translator, Beckett can be said to be part of a revolutionary literature. His rejection and exploitation of the literary tradition make him an ambivalent writer. The problem of singularity regarding his works is crucial in the stabilization of identity. Moreover, the lack of a major theme becomes an obstacle to the definition of such works. The representation of these multiple identities will be analyzed in order to elucidate the following inquiry: To what extent does Beckett's texts shed light on the seminal notions of rootlessness and cultural in-betweenness as well as on the rejection of identification through self-exploration and radical experimentation A certain number of critical readings will be used to discuss Beckett's place in literature through his characters' apparent lack of attachment to any tradition. Does literature have a function in the formation of identity What sort of renovation does the Beckettian texts offer It will be first noted that his borrowings from the French and Irish traditions coupled with his aloofness to them are indicators of the complexity of his mode of communication which is itself predicated on individual and conventional systems of discourse. By means of exploring the essential antagonisms that departure and return represent, this study will attempt to identify the literary forms of identity and apprehend the constant redefinition of the self whose ambiguous nature have to be examined in the light of the paradox between multiplicity and reduction. How are marginalization and alterity experienced in the author's post-colonial writings Beckett's bilingual experience via the relationship between the man and his work will complement this research. This study explores the sort of link which exists between the authors' writings, Irish nationality, and nationalism. To what extent can Joyce and Yeats be said to write about the same Ireland while proceeding in a different way How do they situate themselves in the process of nation-building Irish nationalism was much debated during the literary revival up until the Post-Free State period. If it is true that it triggered tensions between those who supported it and those who did not, in the case of Joyce who excluded himself from the native tradition by exiling and Yeats who was static in the invention of a tradition, it is more complex. Both share a cultural memory but also possess their own individual memory in which modernism does not mean the same thing. It will be seen that they participate in the culture they criticize while remaining aloof from it and that the material they use to mount this critique is a form of refuge which at the same time is not directed towards the same goal. 16 pp. Englisch.
