Illustrated with black-and-white photographs, charts and maps. "What ever happened to Daktar? What has become of Bangladesh? Although battered, burned, looted, and beaten down by a cruel war, the infant nation of Bangladesh struggles unsteadily to its feet. Dr. Viggo Olsen -- the beloved Daktar who cared for dying Bangladeshis during the shocking war, the brilliant American surgeon/diplomat -- is granted visa #001 by the fledgling government and returns to Bangladesh to help rebuild. Ten years pass swiftly. The extraordinary events of Bangladesh's first decade vividly recounted in Daktar II will grip you from beginning to end: Day by day living in a world of floods, famine, bloody coups and counter-coups, enormous obstacles, and an endless stream of sick and dying people; Compassionate, skillful care of unusual and difficult surgical cases; Dynamic and effective outreach to villagers, refugees, exotic tribesmen -- and to the elite; Startlingly successful negotionations with the leaders of the nation -- many of whom become Daktar's friends and patients. Ziaur Rahman, the late president of Bangladesh, confided, "You have a right to know many secrets which others do not. You are not a foreigner anymore. You'll be my friend - OK?" Great Britain's deputy ambassador, pointing a finger at Daktar, exclaimed, "It is because of you that I am here in Bangladesh!" -- from the rear outer jacket. "Dr. Viggo Olsen's Daktar: Diplomat in Bangladesh became a runaway bestseller. Week after week it remained #1 on a prominent bestsellers list and was soon translated into five languages and Braille. Yet, while his book was receiving stellar reviews and prestigious awards, Daktar returned to Bangladesh on visa #001 to house the homeless and heal the hurt and dying. Now in Daktar II he tells the dramatic story of the new nation's blood-drenched first decade -- the pain, the tears, the hunger, the incredible difficulties, but also the healing and new life brought by the touch of Daktar and his co-workers. Daktar is: The messenger of love; The warm-hearted surgeon/physician sought by the multitudes; The diplomat skillfully negotiating for his causes with leaders of the new nation. No wonder a noted author declared, "Dr. Olsen is the world's leading Christian statesman today." And the New York Times called him a man "in the tradition of Dr. Livingstone." And Bangladesh's esteemed President Hossain Mohammad Ershad exclaimed, "I must say that you have done a wonderful job here in our country, looking after the poor people. And I should say it is a total commitment, what you have done as a doctor -- not only as a doctor but as a human being. I very much appreciate it! I have wanted to meet you. Thank you for coming. I very much appreciate what you are doing. And I wish some doctors from our country would take an example from you. I wish I were a doctor and could go and sit there in the jungle like you and treat people." -- from the inner front jacket flap.
