[This complete edition first printed in 1862] 'Preface to the edition [titled: Jesus and Mary] of 1849. The following Hymns do not, as will be seen, form anything like a perfect collection, but are given as a specimen of a much larger and more complete work. The Author has had a double end in view in the composition of them; first, to furnish some simple and original hymns for singing; secondly, to provide English Catholics with a hymn-book for reading, in the simplest and least involved metres.' (p. [xiii]) -- Preface (dated at end, 1861): 'This is a perfect collection of the Hymns, the only one; but it contains also an addition of fifty-six new Hymns, fulfilling with tolerable accuracy his original conception of what the Hymn Book should be and should contain.' (p. ix) -- The hymns 'My God! how wonderful Thou art' (no. 9) and 'Faith of our Fathers! living still / In spite of dungeon, fire, and sword:' in its two versions (for England, for Ireland: no. 93) first appeared in Jesus and Mary, 1849. -- 'Souls of men! why will ye scatter / Like a crowd of frightened sheep?' (no. 102: 8 stanzas printed in Oratorian hymns, 1854), here contains 13 stanzas: 2. Was there ever kindest shepherd / Half so gentle, half so sweet, 4. There's a wideness in God's mercy, / Like the wideness of the sea, 8. For the love of God is broader / Than the measures of man's mind. -- [The first printing of this complete edition carries the date MDCCCLXII. on the title-page; the second edition was in print by 1866] This undated copy includes two leaves of advertistments, conjugate with pages 417-20, with a title published in 1872.
