First Edition. Quarto. Staple-bound, photo-illustrated wrappers; [52]pp; chiefly illus. Occasional mild corner-creasing, else clean, tight, and unmarked; Near Fine. Rare photobook documenting Vortex 1: A Biodegradable Festival of Life, a one-week rock festival held in Clackamas County, Oregon in the late summer of 1970. The festival was sponsored by the state of Oregon in an effort to keep Portland's counterculture community from descending on the city during an appearance by Richard Nixon. The free event drew an estimated 100,000 attendees and succeeded in its purpose ? Portland saw minimal disruption, though Nixon's appearance was cancelled anyway. Though one of the largest musical events of the era, the concert has been largely forgotten ? probably because it included mostly local acts and was publicized primarily by word of mouth, resulting in practicallliy no press coverage. This souvenir booklet, filled with photographs highly evocative of the place and time, is practically the only visual documentation remaining of the festival. Uncommon; 9 locations notes in OCLC, very seldom encountered in commerce.
