Yet we still view the Shenandoah as a star among East Coast Rivers. Almost every section rates high in scenic beauty. Every type of canoeist familiar with it will praise it. At any time of the year one part or an another is canoeable. When flooding occurs the smaller headwaters excel. When dry summer months drain its resources the lower, wider sections still provide many hours of fun. It is because of the tremendous variety of possibilities on this river that we have departed from our usual format of setting up individual trips. We hope you have used the trips from earlier volumes of Blue Ridge Voyages to become familiar with selecting and planning your own trips. On the Shenandoah you have possibilities of not only one and two day trips, but also week long excursions. With an honest awareness of your own skill and attention to the water levels, you should be able to turn this data into a very successful cruise. We feel very strongly that emphasis on water levels cannot be overplayed. While most of the Shenandoah is seldom too low for the canoe to maneuver, it does occasionally become flooded. Please be reminded: Canoeing in high water is not particularly pleasant. The river is ugly when it is high and muddy, often carrying with it large pieces of floating debris.
