PEDAGOGY & POP CULTURE A scarce survivor of late-twentieth-century alternative math pedagogy, this set preserves both the printed instructional manual and its original audio component. Chisanbop is a tactile calculation system developed in Korea and adapted fo…r the American market in 1977, allowing users to perform complex arithmetic using only their fingers as a physical abacus. This 'Parent's Guide' represents the height of the finger-math craze that swept American experimental and special-education classrooms in the late 1970s. KEY FEATURES +++ Audio Component: Includes the original 33? rpm long-play record used for home instruction. +++ Visuals: Profusely illustrated with 67 pages of instructional diagrams showing finger positions and numerical representations. +++ Historical Context: Documents the brief but intense period of 'Finger Math' adoption in U.S. experimental education. +++ Format: Square format stapled pictotial wraps; 9.25 x 9.25 inches. +++ Provenance: Published by the official Chisanbop Enterprises in Bronxville, NY. CONDITION: Very Good -- In collectible condition. The original stapled pictorial wraps are sound with moderate handling wear to corners and edges, including small creases. Internally clean with light, even age-toning. The accompanying 33? rpm instructional LP appears clean with light surface wear. A complete and well-preserved example of a typically ephemeral educational set. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- Developed in Korea in the 1940s by Sung Jin Pai and later popularized in the U.S. by his son, Hang Young Pai, Chisanbop was marketed as a revolutionary way to achieve mathematical literacy without mechanical aids. The system assigns values to fingers (the thumb representing five) and utilizes both hands to calculate numbers from 0 to 99. During its peak in 1978, the method was featured on national television and became a hallmark of the 'back-to-basics' movement in mathematics, despite its highly specialized technical requirements. Because these kits were intended for heavy use by parents and students, complete survivors featuring both the manual and the vinyl record are uncommon. SUBJECTS: Mathematics Education, Alternative Pedagogy, Finger Counting Systems, Chisanbop Method, Educational Audio, Special Education, 1970s Social History, Instructional Manuals, Educational Ephemera, Multimedia Sets.
